What is your relationship to decision making?
Do you tend to make impulsive decisions?
Do they come easily and flow through you?
Do you get paralyzed and freeze in overthinking?
Or do you fall some where in the middle?
Before moving abroad for a few months, my husband and I agreed we were going to be open to wherever the wind blew us while planning. We had a few prerequisite pillars in our planning. For instance, scheduled conferences and meetings my husband has in various European cities. Traveling within an appropriate budget. Spending an extended amount of time in Spain to practice our Spanish. Landing in a creative and beautiful environment.
Before we left on this adventure, I remember sitting on the floor in my home office and said to my husband, “Since we are building this trip while we are on it, we are going to have to make a lot of quick decisions. I want to get really good at making easeful decisions, trusting myself.”
A default setting of mine is to let the perfectionist mind creep in and want to optimize everything. This patterning is exhausting and can trap me in the cycle of analysis paralysis.
Does that happen to you?
I have found there is a delicate dance when it comes to pausing before responding to life choices. There is power in the pause. The pause to check-in with yourself, get quiet and listen to insights on big and small decisions. It can be skillful to gain data and tap into that felt sense. However, sometimes the pause can linger too long and create quicksand—a mental spiral of trying to “think your way through a decision” instead of sense, trust and take the leap.
This Week’s Practice:
I welcome you to notice your relationship to making big and small decisions. Where do you tend to fall on the spectrum?
🌀 Reactive → 😊 Adaptive → ⚖️ Intentional → 🎯 Strategic → 🤯 Perfectionistic
🌀 Reactive (Impulsive) – Acts without much thought, driven by emotion or habit.
😊 Adaptive (Satisficing) – Chooses an option that works well enough, prioritizing efficiency.
⚖️ Intentional (Balanced Thinking) – Thoughtfully weighs options without overthinking. Trusts gut instincts.
🎯 Strategic (Optimizing) – Seeks the best possible outcome, considering long-term impact.
🤯 Perfectionistic (Overanalyzing/Paralysis) – Struggles to decide due to fear of imperfection.
