Recently I have been noticing the balance or should I say imbalance of masculine and feminine energies being expressed in my life. And it is no coincidence that many of my coaching clients have brought this topic up in our recent sessions.
If you are new to these concepts here is my perspective on them:
Masculine and feminine energy are human constructs that identify characteristics and ways of being that are non gender specific.
Every human has a mix of both masculine and feminine energy.
Discovering your unique expressions of these energies can offer healing, insight and more inner and outer alignment in life.
Common masculine characteristics are:
Action - focused on doing, achieving, setting goals
Providing - hunter energy that creates safety, stability, responsibility
Discipline - consistent perseverance, control, structure
Independent - autonomy, self-sufficient, personal authority
Logic - thinking mind, rational, problem solver
Common feminine characteristics are:
Receptivity - allowing, being present to what is here rather than pushing or forcing
Intuition - deeply embodied, trusting inner and outer knowing, connection to spirit
Nurturing - offering care to self and others, empathy, emotional intelligence, rest
Playful - whimsical, freedom, imagination, possibilities, flow
Connection - Harmony in community, gathering, social, listening
Years ago, I was in a therapy session where my therapist recommended that I build a fire sometime in the next week. She was nudging me to engage in more masculine energy because my system was out of balance. To be honest I never did it. But I did take to heart the reminder that I needed more masculine structure in my feminine flowy life. In order to embody masculine energy, I whisper to myself: “chop, wood, carry water.” This Zen proverb reminds me to stay focused and do the the boring or mundane tasks that are needed in life.
However, I notice in a culture that is hyper masculine—full of hustle culture and capitalistic competition, a lot of women in corporate are feeling like they are losing touch with their feminine energy. The ingrained desire to do and be productive overrides their need for rest and care. Overwhelm of work pushes out the possibility of play or tapping into their intuition. Women that I work with are yearning to express the feminine aspects of themself so they can feel more balanced.
